Hey, friends! This page is a work-in-progress! I’ll start with the ones that I currently use in my novels and will then expand on others. Please bookmark this page and check back, or subscribe to my newsletter to be notified when this page is updated!
It’s important for me to let readers know what to expect in my books. I will break it up into heat level, tropes, hooks, genre elements, themes, and content/trigger warnings. If you are concerned, please read through all sections. Some may fit into multiple, but I put them in what I believe is the best match (this is subjective and you may find something that can fit into multiple categories, so I advise going through the various lists). You will find that some play a major role in a novel, while some may play a minor role.
I want to state that these are my personal lists based on my writing, reading, and research; there may be some differences in how others perceive certain things on this list, which is okay. This list exists so that my readers know what to expect when I use certain terms.
If you have any questions about any of these in regards to my books, please do reach out! I will reply back soon!
What are Heat Levels?
Heat Levels help explain the ‘spiciness’ of a romance novel. It helps readers know what to expect in terms of sex within a novel. There isn’t any set universal standard for this, but there are various scales you will find. Many scales have four or five levels. Sometimes you will see it as chili peppers. Some authors have their own.
I’ve designed my own ‘Heat Level’ scale that lets you see what to expect from my romance novels. Click below to read my ‘Heat Level’ scale.
What are Tropes?
Tropes are familiar storytelling patterns, themes, or plot elements that readers recognize and often specifically seek out in romance novels. They act as a shorthand that helps readers know what to expect from a story. Think of tropes as reliable ingredients in your favorite recipe–while the final dish may be unique, you know certain flavors will be present.
Tropes aren’t clichés–they’re beloved story elements that can be reimagined in fresh, exciting ways. Many readers actively search for specific tropes they enjoy, using them to find new books that match their reading preferences.

What are Hooks?
Hooks are the unique elements or compelling angles that initially capture a reader’s attention and draw them into the story. While tropes might tell readers what kind of romance to expect, hooks are the special ingredients that make a particular story stand out and keep readers turning pages. They’re the aspects that make readers think, “I need to know how this plays out!”
A strong hook not only pulls readers in from the beginning, but maintains their interest throughout the story, making them invested in seeing how these elements resolve alongside the romantic plot.

What are Genre Elements?
Genre elements are the foundational building blocks that shape how a romance story is structured and experienced. These components help readers understand the novel’s setting, style, and format. They’re the framework that supports the story and helps readers know what kind of romantic experience they’re diving into.

What are Themes?
Themes are the deeper messages and fundamental ideas woven throughout a romance novel. While tropes and hooks draw readers in, themes are the meaningful threads that give the story its emotional resonance and lasting impact. They’re the universal truths and human experiences that readers can connect with on a deeper level, such as through a character’s journey.

What are Content/Trigger Warnings?
Content & Trigger Warnings are becoming more common in books. They are often found in darker literature, such as dark romance, but can be found elsewhere. They are advance notifications about potentially sensitive or challenging content within the story. They serve two important purposes: helping readers make informed decisions about what they’re comfortable reading, and helping readers specifically find content they’re interested in. These warnings aren’t meant to discourage reading but rather to help readers prepare for or avoid content that might be distressing to them.
Some of the Content/Trigger Warnings happen throughout the novel, while others may have happened prior to the novel and are only mentioned/referred to; some may happen in the background. The extremity can vary from book to book.
